HSBA Young lawyers division
The HSBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) provides professional development, networking, and community service opportunities for attorneys under 36 or in their first five years of practice.

Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is automatic for all HSBA members until the end of the calendar year in which you turn 36 years old or if you have been in practice less than five years anywhere.
We invite and encourage members to take an active role in the YLD! Contact us at yldhawaii@gmail.com with questions, comments, or suggestions. Feel free to join us at our monthly meetings.
The YLD is a proud affiliate of the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association (ABA). For more information regarding the ABA YLD activities and resources, see the ABA YLD website.

Aloha Kākou,
Mahalo to everyone who joined us for our second YLD Pau Hana at The Village! It was a pleasure meeting so many of you in person and connecting.
We’d also like to extend a heartfelt mahalo to Corporation Counsel, for generously sponsoring Legal Lines this November. Additionally, big mahalo to the many volunteer attorneys who power the lines on their own including Holly Crawford. Your support helps us continue providing valuable legal information to the public, and we truly appreciate your partnership in serving our community.
As we enter the season of gratitude, I want to take a moment to reflect on the values that unite us as lawyers in Hawaiʻi: service, community, and growth. November is a time when many of us pause to give thanks—not only for our families and friends, but also for the opportunities we’ve been given to serve others through our profession.
Thanksgiving reminds us that being a lawyer is about more than just advocacy and analysis—it’s about mālama (to take care of, tend, attend, to serve, and honor). Whether we’re helping a client navigate a difficult legal issue or mentoring a law student, we are in a unique position to give back.
One of the most rewarding ways to serve our community is by investing in the next generation. The HSBA YLD High School Mock Trial is a perfect example. Each year, this program brings together students from across the state to learn about the legal system, develop critical thinking skills, and gain confidence in public speaking. But it can’t happen without your help.
We are currently seeking volunteer attorney coaches for the upcoming mock trial season. Coaching a team is a meaningful way to connect with students, share your knowledge, and inspire future leaders. If you’re interested in volunteering, please reach out to the YLD at yldhawaii@gmail.com.
Community service doesn’t always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it’s as simple as showing up. As we head into the holidays, I encourage each of you to find a way to give back, however small. It’s in these moments that we strengthen our profession and our community.
Mahalo for all that you do. I’m grateful to serve alongside such a dedicated and inspiring group of lawyers. As always, please follow the YLD on social for up-to-date information – in addition to our website, we are on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Warmest wishes for a safe and joyful Thanksgiving season.
Mahalo,
Chad Au
