May 2026

Lauren Watanabe, HSBA Young Lawyers Division President

Aloha,

This month marks the successful conclusion of our Law Day and Law Week celebrations, meaningful service and outreach throughout the state. As we look back on the events of the past few weeks, we are filled with immense gratitude for the collective spirit that makes this initiative possible. From the bustling in-person legal clinics to the busy telephone lines of Legal Lines, our volunteers demonstrated a steady commitment to providing the public with accessible legal information - a huge step in our organization’s commitment to bridging the gap between the public and the legal profession.

Honoring Our Volunteers
Our deepest mahalo goes out to the selfless volunteers who staffed our Law Week clinics on O‘ahu, Maui, Hawai‘i Island, and Kaua‘i. Whether they were greeting neighbors in person or manning the Legal Lines every evening from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, their contributions were invaluable. These individuals provided a vital service, offering free legal information on complex topics including landlord-tenant disputes, personal injury, property damage, and family law.

We also wish to extend a special thank you to our Law Week subject matter experts - seasoned and respected practitioners who lent their time and deep expertise to ensure the highest quality of guidance for our community

  • Derek Turbin: Insurance Defense
  • Derek Peterson: Child Welfare
  • Derek Kobayashi: Personal Injury
  • Shannon Hackett: Family Law
  • Benjamin Lowenthal: Criminal Law

A United Front: Our Community Partners
Law Week is truly a community effort, and its success is a testament to the power of partnership. We are incredibly grateful to the local organizations that graciously opened their facilities for our in-person clinics. Our sincere thanks to the Kaka’ako Farmers Market, Maui Sunday Market, Grove Farm Market, and KTA Superstores. Their hospitality allowed us to meet people exactly where they are. Furthermore, we thank KHON2 News for their continued support of the Ask-a-Lawyer segment on Wake Up 2Day. By bringing legal education into the homes of our neighbors, they help demystify the law for thousands of viewers.

Looking Toward the Future
While we celebrate these recent milestones, the YLD Board is already looking ahead. Planning is currently in full swing for the upcoming Hawai‘i High School Mock Trial Competition season. This program is a cornerstone of our outreach, inspiring the next generation of legal minds and civic leaders.

If you are an attorney interested in coaching a high school team for the upcoming season, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out to us at yldhawaii@gmail.com to get involved. Together, we can continue to build a legacy of service, education, and empowerment for all of Hawai‘i.

Mahalo,
Lauren Watanabe
