This session will cover general Hawaii landlord-tenant basics, the impacts of the Governor’s emergency proclamations, observations of the legal impacts of the Maui wildfires on the rental housing market, and lessons learned from other communities impacted by natural disasters.

Nick Severson, Managing Attorney of the Housing & Consumer Unit, Legal Aid Society of Hawaii
Nick Severson is the Managing Attorney of the Housing & Consumer Unit at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii, where he oversees a team of 5 attorneys and 5 support staff dedicated to addressing housing discrimination, landlord-tenant, and consumer issues across the state. Prior to joining the Housing & Consumer Unit in 2021, Nick began his legal career in Legal Aid’s Maui Office in 2019, where he also served as the Interim Managing Attorney from September 2023 to January 2024. Nick is a graduate of the Villanova University Charles Widger School of Law.
