Summary:

This is the third CLE in the HSBA Disaster Legal Response series. This CLE will cover Hawai'i landlord/tenant law basics with a focus on common landlord/tenant issues that arise following a natural disaster such as the recent Kona Low storms. Topics will include eviction and tenant options after a rental unit is destroyed or damaged.

Jenevieve Discar, Senior Staff Attorney for Disaster Legal Services and Intake at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi

Jenevieve Discar serves as Senior Staff Attorney for Disaster Legal Services and Intake at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi. Her work includes leading Legal Aid's disaster legal services program by organizing and supervising staff outreach efforts and providing direct assistance to impacted members of the community.

Prior to working with Legal Aid, Jenevieve Discar served as a legal advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Pretoria, South Africa.

She holds a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law and a B.A. from Baylor University.

Alicia Pitts, Managing Attorney for the Housing and Consumer Unit at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi

Alicia Pitts is the Managing Attorney for the Housing and Consumer Unit at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi, where she leads efforts to provide critical legal services to low-income individuals and families in the areas of housing law and consumer protection. In addition, she manages Legal Aid Hawaiʻi's Fair Housing Enforcement Program with the goals of promoting fair housing and ending housing discrimination through education, advocacy, outreach, and litigation.

From the start of her legal career, Alicia has been dedicated to ensuring access to justice and equitable outcomes for vulnerable populations; she was awarded the 2013 NY City Bar Justice Center Jeremy G. Epstein Award for her representation of asylum seekers.

Originally from Makakilo, Hawaii, Alicia holds a J.D. from UC Law San Francisco (cum laude), a B.A. from New York University, and is a 2001 graduate of Punahou School.
