Summary:
For over three decades, David Louie served as the managing partner of a litigation firm, practicing commercial and construction defect litigation and insurance defense.  In 2010, Governor Abercrombie appointed Mr. Louie to serve as Attorney General of Hawaii.  In that capacity, Mr. Louie not only served as the State's chief legal officer and chief law enforcement officer, but also managed an office of over 150 attorneys and 500 professional and support personnel across the civil and criminal spheres.  After serving a four-year term, Mr. Louie returned to private practice, where he once again handles all matters of civil litigation as well as government relations and procurement. 

In this CLE program, Mr. Louie will look back in time and talk about the lessons learned and the skills acquired and refined in the movement between the private sector and the public sphere.  Mr. Louie will discuss the pathways to success for attorneys interested in the transition to public service and for those considering the move to private practice.  Come and listen as Mr. Louie provides practice pointers key to improving professional competence and relevant to practitioners of all ages and experience levels.

David Louie, Former Attorney General
David Louie handles complex commercial litigation, construction defect litigation, general liability insurance defense involving catastrophic injuries, government relations, and procurement. He is the former Attorney General of Hawaii, having served a four-year term from 2011 to 2014. As Attorney General, he was the chief law enforcement officer for Hawaii, providing advice, counsel, and representation to the Governor, Legislature, state agencies, and employees.

Mr. Louie graduated from Occidental College and Boalt Hall School of Law (now Berkeley Law School). From 1977 to 2010, Mr. Louie was the managing partner of a litigation firm, practicing in the areas of civil litigation, insurance defense, construction defect litigation, and commercial litigation. He has handled numerous jury trials to verdict, including high profile matters. Mr. Louie was inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2016. In 2015, Mr. Louie received the Daniel K. Inouye Trailblazer Award from the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. He received the Occidental College Alumni Seal Award in 2013. Mr. Louie has been named a Hawaii Super Lawyer (2008-2011). He served as the President, Vice President, and Director of the Hawaii State Bar Association (1995-2001) and Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and a Director of the Hawaii Defense Lawyers Association (1993-2010). He was a Lawyer Representative for the United States Court of Appeals (Ninth Circuit) (2005-2008) and Northwest Regional Governor for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (2008-2010). He served as a Director (1998-2006) and the Chair (1999-2005) of the State of Hawaii Aloha Tower Development Corporation. He served as the Vice-Chair of the Hawaii Supreme Court Rule 19 Special Committee on Judicial Performance (1999-2010) concerning judicial evaluations.

Mr. Louie currently serves as the Secretary of Easter Seals Hawaii and a board member of the American Judicature Society (Hawaii). He is a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel, where he was a past Co-Chair for the Premises Liability Section, and a past Chair of the Diversity Committee. He is a member of the Society of Attorneys General Emeritus. As Attorney General, he was a member of the National Association of Attorneys General, and served as the Chair or Vice-Chair of the Intellectual Property, Internet Safety and Cyber Security/Privacy, Consumer Protection, and Civil Rights Committees. He is a member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys, Trial Attorneys of America, the Defense Research Institute and the American Bar Association. Mr. Louie has been a faculty member and lecturer for numerous continuing legal education seminars for the American Conference Institute, HSBA, FDCC, NAPABA, ABA, Pacific Law Institute, Professional Education Systems, Inc. and the National Business Institute. He has authored a number of published articles regarding trial techniques and legal issues.
