HSBA Board Action

The HSBA Board took the following actions at its meeting in April:

  • Voted to ratify the HSBA President’s remaining appointment of the HSBA representative to the Supreme Court Nominating Committee: Derek Kobayashi;
  • Approved the recommendation of the Executive Committee to sign the pledge of the National Conference of Bar Presidents for an independent legal profession and judicial system;
  • Approved the recommendation of the Executive Committee to ask the West Hawaii Bar Association to present two or more names of qualified nominees for the Board’s consideration to fill the West Hawaii Director position on the HSBA Board; names of qualified nominees from the current HSBA Board members for the Oahu Director will also be considered;
  • Determined that State Budget legislative bill HB1800 HD1 SD1, with respect to the funding of the Office of the Public Defender, meets the Keller analysis (i.e. is germane to the purposes of the unified bar and would generally be supported by HSBA members);
  • Voted to send a letter to the Conference Committee that will meet to resolve differences on HB1800 HD1 SD1 expressing HSBA’s support for the Office of the Public Defender’s position to oppose the proposed reduction in the OPD’s budget.
