Jacob Lowenthal, Lowenthal & Lowenthal, Founder and Managing Partner
Jacob Lowenthal, a 2013 law school graduate, is a Plaintiff’s attorney on the island of Maui. He is the founder and managing partner of Lowenthal & Lowenthal.
He currently serves on the Board of the Hawaii State Bar Association as the Maui Director, chairs HSBA’s Technology Committee, and serves as Vice President for HSBA’s litigation division. He previously served as the President and Vice-President for the Maui County Bar Association.
Jacob is also a current federal delegate for the U.S. District Court of Hawaii and a board member for the Hawaii Association for Justice—an association which works to protect the rights of consumers and victims.
When previously practicing as a criminal defense attorney, Jacob successfully argued in front of the Hawaii Supreme Court, securing those in Hawaii the right to film police while they conduct traffic stops in public.
Jacob was born and raised on Maui and in his free time enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and beach days with his wife and three-year-old son.
Joyce W.Y. Tam-Sugiyama, Watanabe Ing, Partner
Joyce W.Y. Tam-Sugiyama has a broad practice and represents a wide array of clients in commercial and business litigation, employment litigation, agency proceedings, permitting, environmental law, land use, and intellectual property. She also has experience in advising clients in conducting internal investigations and responding to federal grand jury subpoenas.
Before becoming an attorney, Joyce was a civilian chemical engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Philadelphia Division of the U.S. Navy. Leveraging her engineering background, she regularly advises clients on technical and other regulatory issues involving state and federal environmental and land use laws. She brings a diverse background that enables her to advise clients on nearly every aspect of a complex development project, from environmental due diligence, to permitting and compliance, to enforcement actions and litigation.
Joyce also has a breadth of intellectual property experience and has represented various different types of clients ranging from entrepreneurs and small businesses to large Fortune 500 corporations to identify and protect copyright, trademark, and patent assets. She has intellectual property experience in a variety of technologies including renewable energy, oil exploration technology, and pharmaceuticals.
Joyce began her legal career at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in New York, where she frequently took on large-scale “bet-the-company” litigation and was part of a trial team that successfully obtained a jury award of over $105 million. Prior to joining Watanabe Ing, Joyce was a partner and co-chair of the Environmental Practice Group at Carlsmith Ball LLP.
Shan Wirt, Torkildson, Katz, Hetherington, Harris & Knorek's, Senior Associate
H. Shan Wirt is a Senior Associate with Torkildson, Katz, Hetherington, Harris & Knorek’s Honolulu office. Her practice focuses on business dispute resolution and litigation.
Over the years, Shan has provided strategic counsel to clients ranging from FORTUNE 500 companies to local businesses in matters involving business, real property, intellectual property, trust administration, employment and tort issues. She has represented major businesses and organizations, including financial institutions, telecommunications and utilities, manufacturers, medical service entities, contractors and educational institutions, as well as insurance companies and their insureds.
Prior to joining the firm, Shan was the Marketing Communications Group & Program Risk Manager for Hawaii Energy, which is Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties’ ratepayer-funded energy conservation and efficiency program. The program is third-party administered by Leidos (a FORTUNE 500) under contract with the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission. Hawaii Energy was honored in 2016 by Environmental Leader with a “Top Project of the Year” award. The program’s $37 million+ annual budget served a majority of the State’s population (approximately 360,000 households and 60,000 businesses).
Before practicing law, Shan worked for one of the state’s largest public relations firms, as well as a well-regarded boutique firm, specializing in media relations and integrated marketing communications for the tourism and hospitality industry.
She is a 2006 graduate of the University of Hawaii, William S. Richardson School of Law, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Asian-Pacific Law & Policy Journal and participated in the American Bar Association Client Counseling Competition Team.
Shan currently serves as a Trustee of the Hawaii Supreme Court’s Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection, as well as a Board Member of Hawaii Women Lawyers and Hawaii Women’s Legal Foundation
