Summary:
In addition to the usual dialog and of exchange of ideas, evaluation of bills introduced, and debate & decision-making, the COVID response made the 2021 legislative session more challenging. Balancing a two-year budget faced with uncertain revenues and hoping for federal assistance to provide for the basic necessities of those most severely impacted by COVID, and for statewide public health and safety was a task requiring leadership, innovation and perseverance.

Get an update on legislation that was passed during the regular session and the veto override session, and a glimpse of what is anticipated for the 2022 legislative session which convenes in January.

Speakers:

Senator Joy San Buenaventura,
Senator of State Senate District 2
Joy San Buenaventura is a State Senator of State Senate District 2. In the 2021 legislative session, Joy San Buenaventura served as Chair of the Senate Human Services committee and a member of the Senate Commerce and Consumer Protection and Health committees.

In her first term, she was honored by the League of Women Voters due to her efforts to increase voter participation and to make the elections officer accountable for election day errors. Prior to being elected, she was an attorney in solo practice for over 30 years and had won 3 out of 3 applications for writ of certiorari in the Hawaii Supreme Court. She was one of the attorneys who argued a divorce case at the initial neighbor island Courts in the Community program that was held in Hilo; and 2 days later argued in front of the same Hawaii Supreme Court, a criminal felony case for which she was court-appointed solely for the appeal.  Both she and co-presenter Della Au Bellati were involved in their respective capacities in the introduction, hearing and amending of a number of the major bills that passed in the 2021 session.

Representative Della Au Belatti, Representative of State House District 24
