To conform to State COVID large gatherings guidelines, the November 2021 Supreme Court Rule 1.14 Professionalism Course will be presented online as 3 separate, convenient on-demand webinars. Rule 1.14(a) of the Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Hawaii ("RSCH") requires that each person licensed to practice law after July 1, 2001, shall, no later than December 31 of the following year of election of active status, complete the Hawaii Professionalism Course conducted under the joint sponsorship of the Hawaii State Bar Association ("HSBA") and the Supreme Court of Hawaii. Failure to complete this course within the time period specified shall result in automatic administrative suspension of one's license to practice law. Please note, any person eligible to take the November 2020 Hawaii Professionalism Course shall be afforded an additional one year to comply with Rule 1.14(a) of the Rules of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. Law Office of David Hayakawa
David M. Hayakawa has been a practicing criminal defense attorney since graduating from the University of Hawaii Richardson School of Law in 1987. He was a Deputy Public Defender for 12 years and then in private practice with Coates & Frey (Family Law) and the Law Office of Howard Luke (Criminal Defense) until 2012 when the Law Office of David Hayakawa opened.  Mr. Hayakawa handles all types of criminal cases and TRO matters and has served as lead counsel in well over 100 felony jury trials. Mr. Hayakawa has been named to the Best Lawyers in American for Criminal Defense (non-White Collar) and Honolulu Magazine’s Best Lawyers List for Criminal Defense (non-White Collar) and in 2020 both organizations named him Lawyer of the Year for General Criminal Defense.
                                        
Mr. Hayakawa has been actively involved with legal education for practitioners and students during his career and has been awarded the HSBA Ikena Award for outstanding achievements in legal education. For the past seven years, he has served as the Dean of the HSBA Trial Academy.  He was a Criminal Law Instructor with the Kapiolani Community College Legal Education Department for six years and still serves on the KCC-Legal Education Department Advisory Board.  He continues to lecture frequently at university and college classes and speak at HSBA programs. Mr. Hayakawa serves as the Executive Producer of the annual “Rock4Justice” FUNraiser where judges, attorneys and the entire Courthouse Ohana gather for a rock and roll fundraiser. In addition to his legal-related activities, Mr. Hayakawa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the non-profit Kilohana Senior Enrichment Center and presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Kilohana Pre-school, on the Salary Commission of the City and County of Honolulu and on the State of Hawaii’s Public Defender Council.

David M. Louie, Kobayashi Sugita & Goda, LLP
David M. Louie is a civil litigator at Kobayashi Sugita & Goda, LLP in Honolulu, Hawaii, handling commercial disputes, construction defect claims, catastrophic personal injury defense, constitutional issues for the State of Hawaii, government affairs, and lobbying.  

From 2011 to 2014, Mr. Louie served as the Attorney General of Hawaii. He provided advice, counsel and representation to the Governor, Cabinet, Legislature and all State agencies and employees. Prior to serving as Attorney General, Mr. Louie was in private practice for 32 years, handling civil litigation, insurance defense, construction defect and commercial litigation matters. Mr. Louie graduated from Occidental College and Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a past president of the Hawaii State Bar Association.

Peter W. Olson, Cades Schutte LLP
Peter W. Olson is a Senior Counsel with Cades Schutte LLP. He was admitted to the Hawaii bar in 1983 and has practiced since then in the firm’s litigation department. One of his practice areas has been the representation of attorneys in legal malpractice litigation and in matters before the Office of Disciplinary Counsel. He was co-chair of the HSBA Attorney Client Relations Committee for more than 20 years, assisting clients with the resolution of fee and other disputes with their attorneys. Prior to his retirement from full-time practice, Mr. Olson served in the role of general counsel to his firm for more than 15 years, counseling lawyers in the firm on risk management and professional responsibility issues.

Mr. Olson was on the board of directors of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii for 10 years, serving as President of VLSH from 2011-2015. Mr. Olson was an adjunct professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where he taught media law to undergraduate journalism students.
