Summary:
Our form of government based on three co-equal branches requires each branch to do its part in order for democracy to be successful. Ironically, every so many decades, the Congress calls upon itself to investigate and exercise oversight to perform its constitutional mandate. The mandate is to pass legislation to carry out its powers. The Mueller report has become a household word and the nation is divided on whether Congress should impeach President Trump. The Speaker of the House has said that there needs to be a thorough investigation first. History has shown us the work of Congress in controversies such as the Teapot Dome Scandal, McCarthy Hearings, Watergate Hearings, and Iran-Contra. The Mueller report primarily addresses the role of Russia in the 2016 Presidential Election. This Seminar will address the authority to conduct the investigation, what may happen and what can be the result.

Representative Colleen Hanabusa:
Colleen Hanabusa is the fourth generation of her family from Wai`anae. She attended Waianae Elementary School and graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law. She has served in the Hawai`i State Legislature and the United States Congress, 112th to 115th Congresses. She is the first woman to lead either Chamber in the Hawai`i State Legislature. She was Senate President from late 2006 to 2010. She has earned many awards including the ABA’s Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity Spirit of Excellence Award (2009) as well as the Dean’s Award from the William S. Richardson School of Law. While in Congress, she served as the ranking member of the Subcommittees on Indian and Alaskan Native Affairs and Public Lands. Prior to her election to Congress, she worked in the area of Labor and Employment Law. Ms. Hanabusa also served as a Board member for the Hawaii Gas Company and is both a member and Chair for HART.
