Receiving a letter from ODC saying there’s a complaint against you is decidedly unpleasant.  Most attorneys don’t know what to expect and what to do – or not do – in response.  But more than anything, attorneys want to know how to avoid getting a complaint in the first place.

We will cover these topics by discussing how the process works start to finish: types of sanctions and factors at play for imposing them; common types of complaints; and some recent cases and updates. All of these topics will be covered with an eye toward best practices and preventing misconduct.

Rebecca M. Salwin,Deputy Chief Disciplinary Counsel, Hawaii Office of Disciplinary Counsel

Rebecca M. Salwin is currently the Deputy Chief Disciplinary Counsel for the Hawai‘i Office of Disciplinary Counsel. Before joining ODC, she clerked for the Honorable Magistrate Judge Richard L. Puglisi. Prior to coming to Hawai‘i, she was an Assistant Public Defender in New Mexico and also clerked for the Honorable Bruce D. Black, District Court Judge for the Federal District of New Mexico. She is a proud graduate of Vanderbilt Law School.

Chloe M.R. Fasi,
Assistant Disciplinary Counsel, Hawaii Office of Disciplinary Counsel

Chloe M.R. Fasi is an Assistant Disciplinary Counsel with the Office of Disciplinary Counsel. Ms. Fasi graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law. Upon graduation, Ms. Fasi Chloe clerked for the Honorable Dexter D. Del Rosario (retired), and subsequently served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu, in the Felony Trials Division.

Ryan S. Little, Assistant Disciplinary Counsel, Hawaii Office of Disciplinary Counsel

Ryan S. Little has served as an Assistant Disciplinary Counsel at ODC since 2018. Since joining, he has been inspired by Hawai?i-licensed attorneys’ desire to always conduct themselves ethically. Understanding how stressful it is to receive an ODC letter, Ryan is excited to assist with this CLE – after all, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When not at work, Ryan is likely spending time at the beach, or a pau hana, or both.
