Summary:

This CLE will be for anyone who is exploring going out and starting their own law practice and for those who may have recently gone out on their own and are in the early stages of establishing and growing their solo practice. We plan to cover a diverse range of topics. The panelists who practice in the areas of business/real estate, employment law, and family law will share their journeys, lessons learned, and offer practical tips and advice.

Chenise K. Iwamasa is a Commercial Leasing Attorney at Ziva Law. Her practice focuses on helping commercial tenants negotiate better leases and navigate lease issues. Chenise founded Ziva Law with a vision of developing a micro-niche commercial leasing law practice because she is passionate about helping small businesses thrive in Hawai‘i. Chenise is a past Chair of the Real Property and Financial Services Section of the Hawai‘i State Bar Association. She is nationally recognized by Best Lawyers, locally recognized by Honolulu Magazine’s Best Lawyers in Hawai‘i (Real Estate) and is Martindale-Hubbell AV-Preeminent Peer Review Rated.

Seth Buckley, Esq., Liko Collective

Seth is the founder and managing attorney of The Liko Collective, a modern law firm that is dedicated to challenging conventional thinking for legal, business, and private equity services. 

As a local business advisor, Seth counsels businesses in all corporate matters, including entity choice and formation, governance issues, stock and asset sales, and mergers and acquisitions; assisting clients to develop a comprehensive strategy for intellectual property, including trademark and copyright protection, licensing, and franchising; and drafting and negotiating all types of commercial contracts, such as services, employment, confidentiality, licensing, distribution, non-disclosure and non-competition. His work in the real estate market involves assisting realtors, businesses, and investors in purchase and sale transactions, 1031 exchanges, condominiums, commercial leasing, conveyancing, and easement/encroachment issues.

Seth loves the Asia Pacific region,and has traveled there extensively. Seth's sojourns include legal studies (at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong) and working for law firms in Hawaii, Australia, and China. Seth has held business law seminars and lectured throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including here at home as a guest lecturer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. While in China, Seth published several articles on the 2008 Financial Crises and Chinese commercial law and practice.

Darin Leong, Esq., Attorney at Law
Darin R. Leong represents clients in a wide range of employment and labor matters, including federal and state court litigation of wrongful termination, harassment, reasonable accommodation, breach of contract/non-compete agreements, and other employment claims; discrimination and harassment cases before administrative agencies; negotiation of executive employment agreements; wage and hour compliance; OSHA/HIOSH investigations and compliance; and traditional labor matters such as collective bargaining, labor arbitrations and unfair labor practice charges.

Darin also conducts workplace investigations and provides counseling and training for employers and their supervisory employees to manage personnel issues and comply with various employment laws.
Darin has represented clients in employment and labor law matters since 2004. Darin began his career at Proskauer Rose in New York City, representing a variety of Fortune 500 companies in all aspects of employment and labor law.
Darin returned to Hawaii in 2007 and joined Marr Jones & Wang, a boutique law firm focusing exclusively in employment and labor law. Darin was a partner at the firm from 2013-2019.
In 2019, Darin left Marr Jones & Wang to open his own employment and labor law practice.
 

Gemma-Rose Poland Soon, Esq. Attorney at Law
Gemma-Rose Poland Soon, Esq., is solo practitioner, who practices in the area of family law.  Prior to working in private practice, Gemma clerked for Justice Sabrina S. McKenna, both at the Family Court of the First Circuit, when Justice McKenna was the Senior Judge of the Family Court of the First Circuit, and at the Hawaii Supreme Court upon Justice McKenna’s appointment as an Associate Supreme Court Justice.  Gemma has been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star since 2014 and is involved in various Bar, pro bono, and community organizations and efforts.  Gemma is the immediate former chair of the Family Law Section of the HSBA.
