Justice James Jr. Duffy (ret.), Associate Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court
James E. Duffy, Jr. served as an Associate Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court from 2003-June 1, 2012. Prior to serving on the Supreme Court, Justice Duffy was a founding member of the firm Fujiyama, Duffy and Fujiyama, a practicing trial lawyer for 35 years, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in diverse matters, including professional liability, products liability, personal injury, commercial, business and general civil matters.

In addition, in his practice years, Justice Duffy also served as a mediator, arbitrator and special master in well over 300 matters, including business, commercial, real estate, insurance, employment, labor, trust, probate, tort, products liability, personal injury and professional liability.

Justice Duffy is a past President of the Hawaii State Bar Association, and is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. Justice Duffy received a Life-time Achievement Award from the Hawaii State Bar Association, a Life-time Achievement Award from the Consumer Lawyers of Hawaii, the John S. Edmunds Award for Civility and Vigorous Advocacy, and the C. Frederick Schutte Award for outstanding contribution to the legal community and the profession.

Justice Duffy is a graduate of the College of St. Thomas and Marquette University Law School (1968) where he was a member of the Board of Editors of the Marquette Law Review.

James Leavitt, Leavitt, Yamane & Soldner
Mr. Leavitt has been a Hawaii trial lawyer for forty-eight years. That experience has given him a deeper understanding of Hawaiian law and local practices which helps him obtain outstanding results for his clients.

For example, the Hawaii Supreme Court expanded the definition of “product” in product liability cases when hearing Armstrong v. Cione.

Mr. Leavitt was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps (JAG) when he was assigned to Pearl Harbor in 1968. Upon completing his service in 1970, he joined the original Public Defenders Office here and then started the firm in 1972.

In his spare time he enjoys surfing.

Kenneth Robbins, Bronster Fujichaku Robbins
Every legal dispute should be resolved as early and efficiently as possible, says Ken Robbins. With vast experience at trial, professionalism and civility, Robbins has negotiated extremely favorable settlements for his clients for many years. When it's necessary to go to court, however, Robbins has 44 years of experience, having tried to a verdict more than 140 cases with a success rate of better than 95 percent. To what does he attribute his success?

Out-of-the-box thinking, hard work, and common sense, says Robbins, who has been named among the Best Lawyers in America since 1995, including Lawyer of the Year in Personal Injury Litigation in 2010 and 2013. He has also been listed as one of Hawaii's top business litigators by Super Lawyers since 2008; and he has a Martindale-Hubbell AV rating. A member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, Robbins has taught as a master at trial at both bar and judicial conferences.

L. Richard Fried, Jr. is one of the founding members of the firm and has practiced law for over forty years. Mr. Fried has a national reputation in the fields of medical malpractice (having obtained 50 verdicts and settlements in excess of $1 million) and aviation law.

He is listed in a number of lawyers' directories including the Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Fried was in 1984 and 2001 the President of the Consumer Lawyers of Hawaii. He was the recipient of the Consumer Lawyers of Hawaii's first trial lawyer of the year award in 1994. Mr. Fried was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Hawaii State Supreme Court to serve on the Judicial Evaluation Committee for the State of Hawaii and the Chief Judge of the Hawaii Federal District Court to serve as a delegate to the federal district judges conference. During law school, he received several book awards for academic achievement. Mr. Fried has been invited to join a number of trial lawyer associations. He frequently conducts teaching seminars for other attorneys in various aspects of tort law.

John Thomas Jr., Cronin, Fried, Sekiya, Kekina & Fairbanks

John D. Thomas, Jr. joined the firm in 1980. He has practiced law for over 35 years.

Mr. Thomas has lectured at legal seminars for attorneys and has authored a chapter in the Hawaii Motor Vehicle Collision Manual published in Hawaii in 1990. He was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court to the State of Hawaii Rules of Evidence Committee, and has been a committee member since 1993. Mr. Thomas was chair of the Hawaii Tort Law Study Committee from 1997 to 1999.

Mr. Thomas has developed an emphasis in medical negligence cases and has been trial counsel for some of the largest medical malpractice cases in Hawaii.

Jeffrey Portnoy, Cades Schutte. 
Jeff Portnoy is a partner at Cades Schutte practicing in the area of litigation. He previously served as Chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and has practiced law as a civil litigator at the firm since 1972.

Jeff has extensive litigation and alternative dispute resolution experience in several areas of substantive law, including insurance, employment, mass tort, product liability, media, securities, and medical and legal professional errors and omissions.

Jeff currently serves as Treasurer for the Ninth Circuit Historical Society. He was President of the Hawaii State Bar Association in 2007. He is also a past President of the Hawaii Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and he served a three year term as Hawaii’s representative to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Advisory Board.
Jeff has served two three-year terms as a Lawyer Representative to the Ninth Circuit and was Chairman of the United States District Court Advisory (Biden) Committee. He also served as a Hawai‘i State Per Diem Judge and was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Hawai‘i teaching media law for several years. He is a member of the Hawaii ABOTA chapter. Jeff has served as the Hawaii State Representative to the Defense Research Institute. He has also served as the Hawaii State Bar Association’s representative to the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates. He is presently a vice chair of the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents.

He has been named Best Lawyers® Lawyer of the Year for Legal Malpractice Law – Defendants (2016), Bet-the-Company Litigation (2013), and Insurance Law (2011).  He has also been recognized by Best Lawyers in America in several practice areas, including Commercial Litigation, Litigation – First Amendment, Insurance Law, Legal Malpractice Law – Defendants, Personal Injury Litigation – Defendants, Litigation – Labor and Employment, and Bet-the-Company Litigation.  Jeff is listed in Who’s Who in America, and he has been the recipient of several local and national awards, including the Society of Professional Journalists’ First Amendment Award, and the Exceptional Performance Award from the Defense Research Institute. Among other state and national recognitions, he has been selected as one of the leading litigators in Hawaii by Chambers USA and several other publications. In 2016, he was recognized as the top Civil Litigation Lawyer by Hawaii Super Lawyers List.

His media clients have included the Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Star Advertiser, Honolulu Publishing, Pacific Business News, Hawaii Tribune Herald, West Hawaii Today, KGMB, KITV, KHON, Clear Channel Communications, New York Post.

In his spare time, he has served as President of Manoa Valley Theatre’s Board of Directors for 25 years and is the color analyst for University of Hawaii basketball on ESPN 1420. Jeff has served as visiting Professor of Law at the Debrecen School of Law, Debrecen, Hungary, in Tartu, Estonia, and in Warsaw, Poland.
