Summary:
A lawyer’s ethical duties are so important that law schools require a professional responsibility course before a law student can graduate, and there is a legal ethics section on the Hawaii bar exam. But what kind of professional responsibility training - if any - does your legal staff receive? As a lawyer, you frequently must supervise non-attorney staff, and the Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct place upon you the duty to ensure the ethical conduct of your staff. One of the purposes of this webinar is to help you to understand your role and responsibilities under HRPC 5.3 and how to address them, with a particular emphasis on your paralegal staff. Paralegals can perform multiple tasks and projects under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Paralegals can also assist in managing the law office and in recognizing and preventing ethics violations.

The other purpose of the webinar is to show you how your paralegal staff can help you in meeting a number of your own ethical obligations under the HRPC, including HRPC 1.2, 1.4, and 1.15.
Join Professor Susan Jaworowski, director of the only ABA-approved Paralegal program in Hawaii, to learn about your obligations under the HRPC to your staff, and also to find out how paralegals can help you to meet your own obligations under the HRPC.

Professor Susan Jaworowski, Kapiolani Community College
Susan clerked for the Honorable Harry Tanaka at the Intermediate Court of Appeals before joining the law firm of Hoddick, Reinwald, O'Connor, & Marrack. In 1987, she moved to the Hawaii State Legislature, where she worked for 19 years in the Legislative Reference Bureau and the Senate Majority Research Office, including serving as the Senate Majority Attorney and the Director of the Senate Majority Research Office. She joined the faculty at Kapi'olani Community College in 2007 as the Paralegal Program Director. She earned her doctorate in Education with a specialization in educational technology from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 2013.
