The June 2022 Supreme Court Rule 1.14
Professionalism Course will be presented online as 3 separate, convenient on-demand webinars.
Rule 1.14(a) of the Rules of the Supreme Court of the State of Hawaii ("RSCH") requires that each
person licensed to practice law after July 1, 2001, shall, no later than December 31 of the following year
of election of active status, complete the Hawaii Professionalism Course conducted under the joint
sponsorship of the Hawaii State Bar Association ("HSBA") and the Supreme Court of Hawaii. Failure to
complete this course within the time period specified shall result in automatic administrative suspension
of one's license to practice law.
Please note, any person eligible to take the November 2020 Hawaii Professionalism Course shall be
afforded an additional one year to comply with Rule 1.14(a) of the Rules of the Supreme Court

Judge Jill A. Otake, U.S. District Court for the District of Hawaii
Jill A. Otake has served on the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii since August 2018. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Russian Language from Georgetown University and her J.D. from the University of Washington, she practiced as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in King County Washington, and later as an Assistant United States Attorney in Seattle (9 years) and Honolulu (4 years). Judge Otake also clerked for the Honorable Simeon R. Acoba, Jr., Associate Justice of the Hawai?i Supreme Court, from 2001-2002.
Judge Otake was co-president of the Asian Bar Association of Washington, a volunteer attorney for Volunteer Legal Services Hawai?i, and a mentor for Hawai?i Women Lawyers. She was a Fellow of the 2016 Hawai?i State Bar Association’s Leadership Institute and is currently a Co-Chair of the HSBA’s Professionalism and Risk Management Committee.

Judge Robert D.S. Kim, Chief Judge of the Third Circuit
Judge Robert D.S. Kim is the Chief Judge for the 3rd Circuit Court, Island of Hawai’i, State of Hawai’i. Judge Kim grew up on the Big Island having attend public school. He is a graduate of the University of Hawaii at Hilo College, and the William S. Richardson School of Law, where he was a member of the law review.
Judge Kim worked in the Hawaii State Senate prior to law school for five (5) sessions, and served for two (2) years as the Committee Clerk for the Senate Judiciary Committee. While at Senate Judiciary he co-authored the Report of the Select Committee Investigating Prison Brutality at the Oahu Correctional Center.
After law school he worked on Oahu for several firms in the areas of construction, banking and other areas of civil litigation. In 1990 he returned to the Big Island and worked at the Kona office of Carlsmith Ball where he practiced real estate and civil litigation. Thereafter he opened his own firm in Kona and practiced civil, criminal, family, environmental law.
As Chief Judge of the Third Circuit, he oversees over 200 employees, 10 judges with an annual budget of approximately 20 million dollars.
Judge Darolyn H. Lendio, District Court of the First Circuit
Judge Darolyn H. Lendio was appointed to the District Court by Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald in March of 2017. She was a partner at McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon LLP. She previously served as Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel for the University of Hawai?i System. She also served as the University of Hawaii’s Interim Executive Administrator and Secretary of the Board of Regents.
Judge Lendio also served as the Corporation Counsel for the City & County of Honolulu and was recognized as Outstanding City Administrator.
Throughout her career, Judge Lendio has served on numerous committees, boards, and commissions, and is currently a member of the Judicial Council, and a past member of the Permanent Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure and Circuit Court Civil Rules, and the Court Annexed Arbitration Program, serving as both an arbitrator and an arbitrator mentor. In addition, she is an active member of Hawai?i Women Lawyers, the Hawai?i Filipino Lawyers Association, and the American Inns of Court, James S. Burns Aloha Chapter. Judge Lendio is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law.
Judge Paul B.K. Wong, Circuit Court of the First Circuit
Paul B.K. Wong was appointed to the Circuit Court of the First Circuit on December 20, 2017. Prior to his appointment as Circuit Judge, he served as a District Judge of the First Circuit, was a Partner with the law firm of McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon, LLP, and a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California and Boston College Law School.
