A Message from Carol K. Muranaka, HSBA President:
Walk with the dreamers, the believers, the courageous, the cheerful, the planners, the doers, the successful people with their heads in the clouds and their feet on the ground. Let their spirit ignite a fire within you to leave this world better than when you found it.
-- Wilferd Peterson
This year, I have met strangers who have become friends and have been inspired by those who give selflessly.
I began the year by acknowledging the energetic individuals who volunteered to lead the various standing committees of the HSBA: (in no particular order): Chuck Crumpton and Beverly Hiramatsu (Attorney-Client Relations); Miles Furutani (Staff and Facilities); Christine Kubota (Awards); Judge Joel August (Delivery of Legal Services to the Public); Associate Justice Simeon R. Acoba and James Kawashima (Judicial Administration); Kenneth Hoo (Lawyer Referral & Information Service); Mihoko Ito and Gary Slovin (Legislation and Public Policy); Miriam Loui (Member Benefits and Services); Gunner Schull and Mark Shklov (CLE); Mei Nakamoto, Daniel Gluck, and Cathy Betts (Diversity, Equality, and the Law); Keith Hiraoka and Evan Shirley (Professional Responsibility and Risk Management); Cynthia Johiro and Ed Kemper (Publications); Damien Elefante (Technology); Ted Pettit (Civics Education); Paul Alston (Consumer Protection); Judge Linda Luke (Nominating); and Lissa Andrews, Clare Connors, P. A Message from YLD President John Roth:
Can you believe that it is already December!?!? I hope everyone completed their billable hours or more importantly their PRO BONO hours and MCPE credits! All joking aside, during this time of the year, it is a good idea to reflect upon the past year and make resolutions for the upcoming year. I hope you can reflect upon the many hours you spent volunteering for HSBA projects.
The major projects accomplished by the YLD board (always with the help of the wonderful staff of the HSBA) include:
- High School Mock Trial Competition
- Law Week/Action Line (Staffing free legal information booths statewide and answered phone calls working with KHON2)
- Legal Lines (Free legal information for the public via phone calls)
- Project Salute (Free legal information for veterans through a one-day legal clinic)
- 3 MCPE credit program (at the HSBA convention with the help of Professor Randall Roth...thanks, Dad!)
- Professional networking

HSBA members made a good showing at the 24th Annual National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) annual conference in mid-November. A conference which started out over two decades ago with a couple hundred attendees garnered 1800 attendees this November in Washington, D.C. The conference offers not only valuable learning opportunities in legal practice areas, leadership development, and civil rights but amazing networking opportunities, being a collegial convening of Asian-American, Pacific Islander and South Asian judges, lawyers, in-house counsel and law students. Hawai`i attendees included Justice Sabrina McKenna, Chief US District Judge Susan Mollway, US District Judge Leslie Kobayashi, Attorney General David Louie, U.S. District Judge nominee Derrick Watson and lawyers Curtis Ching, Keith Lee, Craig Nakanishi, Leighton Oshima, Ed Saffery, Harry Yee, and Louise Ing.
