A Message from President Louise K.Y. Ing:

HRPC and APEC are the call-to-action acronyms of the month, and here's why.

HRPC:  Your bar association board will have a marathon meeting on July 21 to review the proposed revisions to the Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct and comments received about them.  The discussions at this meeting will form the basis for the Board's report to the Supreme Court on the pros and cons of the proposed revisions.  On last check, neither HSBA nor the Supreme Court have received many comments on the proposed amendments to HRPC, even though many of the proposed amendments will affect our practice as lawyers for years to come (e.g., scope of unauthorized practice of law; disclosure of malpractice insurance, permissiblity of screening to protect against conflicts).  We encourage you to comment on these rules, either to the Supreme Court  or

APEC:  You've no doubt heard the news about  Hawaii's unique opportunity this year to serve as the US host of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2011 Leaders Week and APEC Business Advisory Council the week of November 7, 2011.  How can Hawai`i lawyers and their clients contribute this once in a lifetime opportunity to showcase Hawai`i as a place to do business, as well as to play? Leaders of the Judiciary, William S. Richardson Law School, and HSBA met with leaders of the APEC 2011 Hawaii Host Committee and East-West Center last week to explore opportunities for input or participation by members of our bar, judiciary and law school. We'll keep you informed as we learn more.

A Message from YLD President Levi Hookano:

I can’t believe we are now in the second half of 2011.  The time has been flying by and it is already time for nominations to the YLD Board of Directors.

I strongly encourage you to consider running for a seat on the YLD Board.  I have been on this board for just over 4 years and I have enjoyed every minute of it.  We do several projects throughout the year with the High School Mock Trial Competition and Law Week being two of the biggest.  Such projects cannot happen without the support of our volunteers and the leadership of the directors.   If you are interested in being a leader for the YLD please contact James Maruyama at by July 31. If you have any questions about being a director or officer of the YLD please feel free to contact me at
