Veterans Benefits 101: Volunteer Attorney Training

Date: March 28, 2014;
Time: 8:45am – 3:30pm
Location: HSBA Conference Rm.
1100 Alakea St., Ste. 1000 Honolulu, HI 96813

Many veterans are in desperate need of healthcare and other benefits administerd by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Unfortunately, accessing those benefits can take years and leave veterans without the support they need to be self-sufficient. Veterans need your help! Before you can handle a VA benefits claim, you must get accredited. Don't worry - it's easy! Download the application here and submit the completed form to the VA for approval. The accreditation approval can take several weeks to process - so apply now.

Training

Attorneys will receive a 5-hour comprehensive training session designed to prepare attorneys to handle a veteran's benefits claim. The 3-hour morning session will meet the VA's CLE requirements.

CLE Credit

This training is currently pending HSBA approval for 5 VCLE credits with a potential to convert to 3 MCPE credits upon completion of one full representation case on behalf of a veteran.

RSVP

This training is free of charge. To reserve your seat please email: delia@vlsh.org or call 528-7058 by March 21, 2014.

A Message from President Calvin E. Young:

Aloha,

Hauoli Makahiki Hou! I welcome 2014 and all of the promise, hope and good cheer the New Year brings. Best wishes to all for a wonderful year.

I am not saying last year was anything but a really good year, even though I ended 2013 hobbling around wearing a stiff leg brace and carrying a cane! Through the efforts of many of you, our membership increased access to justice for many of our neighbors in every circuit throughout the State by manning the self-help centers; HSBA members turned out in huge numbers to attend the ‘Roadshow on the new Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct’ which shows that quality topics discussed by respected speakers will garner large audiences at CLE presentations; and HSBA again provided funding for the Supreme Court to hold oral argument on a neighbor island, this time in Hilo, and hundreds of students and practitioners were able to attend a first-hand lesson in civics education. But my message is not about recapping last year.

A Message from YLD President Malcolm Barcarse:

As we begin 2014, your Young Lawyers Division will be working on a variety of programs and projects to assist you and the community. Throughout 2014 I will be using this space to inform on what we are working on and how each of you can participate. The first project that I would like to mention is our annual Law Week event in the first week of May. During Law Week we provide Legal Information Clinics at various locations throughout the State and in past years we have done other events coinciding with Law Week as well. In the coming months we will be asking for volunteers for this event and I hope you will join us in this effort. On behalf of the Young Lawyers Division I wish you a Happy New Year and I will give you an update on other things we are working on next month.

For questions or to get involved with the YLD, please contact the YLD Staff Liaison Natalie Millon at nmillon@hsba.org.

To celebrate, honor, and educate the public about the importance of the commitment to preserving civil liberties and the Constitution, Governor Neil Abercrombie signed Act 94 into law on June 7, 2013. Act 94 recognizes January 30th as Civil Liberties and the Constitution Day. In recognition of Civil Liberties and the Constitution Day, the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center and the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association Civic Education Committee have organized an evening program to remind us of the courage of those who remain committed to freedom, even when their own civil liberties and rights are being challenged.
