I am an inactive member now electing active status.  What are my Mandatory Continuing Professional Education (MCPE) requirements?
You are required to complete or show proof of having completed 3 MCPE credit hours within 3 months of electing active status, or 3 months prior to electing active status.  Rule 22(i) applies when a member changes their status from inactive to active, thus triggering the “3 within 3” rule.  Proof of compliance (Certificate(s) of attendance) showing 3 MCPE credit hours should be submitted to the MCLE Administrator within 3 months of electing active status.  Note: RSCH Rule 22(i) is separate and distinct from RSCH Rule 22(a), which requires every active member to complete 3 MCPE by the end of the calendar year.

Contact Debbie Blanton, MCLE Administrator at for MCLE related questions and concerns.

Volunteer Legal Services is planning a CLE in March 2014 for VA benefits, but attorneys will need to apply for accreditation first (which can take several weeks).  We would like to gauge your interest now and answer any questions you may have now. See our flier here

A Message from President Craig Wagnild:

Time flies. A year seemed like a long time – twelve months worth of opportunities to build upon my vision for what your Bar can and should be. Just two short weeks from the end of 2013, I am shocked at how quickly a year went by. But I am also pleased with what we have been able to accomplish and excited about the path we are on.

I started this year with a belief and a hope. My belief: that the HSBA is and can be much more to our members and our profession than just a registrant and collector of dues. That the HSBA can and should service its members and the community in tangible, meaningful ways that raise the level of legal practice, increase access to justice and pro bono service, help Hawaii attorneys build and improve their knowledge and skills, and allow members of our Bar and those in our community to better appreciate our profession and the role we each play in helping people with their problems. My hope: that over the course of this year, we could, collectively, start changing how our members feel about the HSBA and how our community feels about our profession. That was, as you recall, my vision for this year, and every goal, plan, program, and event that we at the HSBA did this year, was carefully calculated as one more step toward accomplishing that vision.

A Message from YLD President Malcolm Barcarse:

In November the YLD organized attorney volunteers to staff the phones at Action Line for three days.  We had attorneys fielding  questions in the areas of family law, labor and employment law, and property law.  Thank you to all of the attorneys that took time out of their workday to work the phones and make it a successful event.

As the holiday season and end of the year approach, I want to take this opportunity to thank the YLD Board, all of our volunteers whether YLD members or other members of the Bar, and the HSBA staff for your commitment and dedication to the various projects that we work on.  It has been an exciting year and I will have the unique opportunity to work with all of you again in 2014.  I wish you a Happy Holiday Season and I look forward to working with all of you again in the New Year.

For questions or to get involved with the YLD, please contact the YLD Staff Liasion Natalie Millon at
