Looking for Pro Bono Opportunities?

Supreme Court Rule 6.1 encourages all members of the Bar to aspire to perform at least 50 hours of pro bono services. In an effort to assist members, the HSBA will list: (1) events where volunteers are needed to provide legal services, and (2) training activities which will lead to the provision of legal services.

If your group or organization would like to list an event or activity which will provide, or which will lead to the provision of, pro bono legal services, please contact us at info@hsba.org.

For the month of July: you may contact Jeanilou G. Torrado of the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii for the seminar on divorce offered for free to attorneys interested in taking a pro bono case with Legal Aid. For reservations contact Jeanilou at 527-8005.

You may see the full list of organizations that can pair you with opportunities here.

A Message from President Carol K. Muranaka:

Carol MuranakaIt is always a treat to become acquainted with people who are willing to volunteer their time to improve the legal profession.

Keith Hiraoka is the dedicated co-chair of the HSBA Committee on Professional Responsibility and Risk Management with Evan Shirley.   Together with committee members, Nadine Ando, Justice Jim Duffy (ret.), Judge Leslie Hayashi, Janet Hunt, Howard Luke, Bill Meheula, Peter Olson, Randy Roth, Carroll Taylor, and John Yamano, the “Hawaii Supreme Court Mandated Professionalism Course”-- revitalized and re-energized -- was launched on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the William S. Richardson School of Law.  The committee worked diligently on an agenda that blended the practical with the ethical theoretical.

Chief Justice Recktenwald commented sagely about the tough decisions that attorneys sometimes face and that the lawyers should rely on people they respect.  He said the “Guidelines of Professional Courtesy and Civility for Hawaii Lawyers” are helpful in dealing with practical everyday issues.  “Honesty and respect are valued,” he said.
