The swearing-in ceremony
for Karen T. Nakasone as Judge of the Circuit Court of the First Circuit was
held on November 1 at the Supreme Court Courtroom among numerous family,
friends and colleagues. President Louise Ing is

- Per Diem Appointments: Patricia C. Aburano,
James H. Hershey and James S. Kawashima were appointed to four-year terms
as per diem judges of the District Court of the First Circuit. Judges Aburano and Hershey were also assigned to preside in
the Family Court. Richard A. Priest, Jr. was appointed to a four-year term
as a per diem judge of the District Court of the Second Circuit.

- Effective June 13, 2011 the Honorable Judge Michael K. Tanigawa will be assigned as a District Court Judge of
the First Circuit. Judge Tanigawa was previously
serving as a Family Court Judge of the First Circuit.
- Cy Pres Amendment Attorneys involved in class action
litigation are reminded that the Hawaii Supreme Court amended Rule 23 of
the Hawaii Rules of Civil Procedure to require the distribution of funds
payable to class members that are not actually paid to such members (as
occurs, for example, when they cannot be located or do not submit a
required form of claim) as provided in the final order of distribution.
The court has discretion to approve the recipient of such funds as agreed
to by the parties. Among the permissible recipients of such funds are
nonprofit legal services providers and the Hawai‘i Justice Foundation (for
distribution by it to such providers). See official press

Justice McKenna's swearing-in
ceremony was held on March 3, 2011 among family and friends at the Hawaii
Supreme Court. Justice McKenna was unanimously approved by the Senate for the
appointment on February 16, 2011.
Honolulu District Court Users May Experience Delays in Accessing Building
Elevators
Work to upgrade and modernize the elevators at the Honolulu District Court
building on the corner of Alakea and Hotel Streets
will begin on Tuesday, February 22. The project should be completed by December
2011.
Court users are being asked to please anticipate and plan for delays when
entering and exiting the building. At least one of the four public elevators
will not be in use during this time.
Court matters handled at this busy courthouse include small
claims and regular claims cases, landlord-tenant disputes, traffic cases, and
misdemeanors. The facility also houses two circuit court divisions
handling domestic violence jury trials.
