HSBA members are eligible to join the ABA Retirement Funds 401(k) plan based on your HSBA membership. This is a great opportunity for firms and solos to establish their retirement account in a system with no administrative fees, which is the reason the HSBA administration has switched to this system!

HSBA President

Announcements already have been made for this year’s HSBA fundraising dinner event that will occur on July 19, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Hawaii State Art Museum located downtown next to the State District Court Building. I want to specially invite and encourage all members and their guests to attend and participate in what will be a great evening of camaraderie, inventive food and drink, top flight music, and viewing of the contest videos, including the winning video. Specific features of this year’s party event:
Food catered by Ed Kenney, Jr. of Town (Conde Nast Traveler 2006 Hot Tables List) and Downtown restaurants (Conde Nast Traveler 2008 Hot Tables List);
Drinks – open bar, including special martini bars;
Music by the Honolulu Jazz Quartet (and perhaps, with some coaxing, special appearances with the band by some of our more talented members);
Silent auction featuring, among other things, jewelry, special wines, restaurant certificates, a wedding day coordination package, and a Mini Cooper;
Viewing within the State Art Museum.
Our video contest is underway. All of you are encouraged to display your video/film talents. Contest rules are posted on the HSBA website. There is a $1,500 grand prize award to the top video selected by a panel of judges.
Table and individual seat sales are underway. Join us and have a terrific time. |

Bench Bar Committee Welcomes Your Input
?xml:namespace> |
|
The Bench/Bar Committee, co-chaired by the Presidents of the HSBA and Hawaii State Trial Judges Association, meets quarterly to discuss and try to resolve concerns regarding judges and attorneys, as well as more global administration of justice issues.
The primary role of the Committee is to serve as a confidential clearinghouse for concerns by the bench and bar. The Committee is not intended to serve as a substitute for the Office of Disciplinary Counsel, Judicial Discipline Commission, or any other existing body. Rather, the Committee will handle cases where no formal disciplinary action is contemplated by the bench and bar, and confidentiality is essential. It is designed to provide positive corrective measures at an early state.
Please help spread the word about this committee and encourage members to contact any of the following committee members with their concerns: Co-Chair Judge Colette Garibaldi, Judge Derrick Chan, Judge Colleen Hirai, Judge Ronald Ibarra, Judge Edward Nacino, Judge Shackley Raffetto, Judge Trudy Senda; and Co-Chair Jeffrey Sia, Peter Cahill, Ellen Carson, Mark Davis, Brook Hart, Harvey Henderson, Charlene Iboshi, Adrienne King, and Jeffrey Portnoy. |

YLD News
?xml:namespace>
|

Jill M. Hasegawa, YLD President
?xml:namespace> |
The YLD would like to thank those individuals who dedicated their valuable time and energy to participate in our recent projects. Through the help of our 40 lawyer volunteers, we reached approximately 3,000 elementary school students at 30 schools across
Oahu?xml:namespace> with our message about making the right choices. Our volunteers also staffed five law week clinics across the island, providing valuable information and resources to those in need of legal services. This week, we sent volunteers into the high schools, helping to prepare juniors and seniors for the world ahead. We ask for the bar's continued support of our YLD programs as we head into the fall. Without your participation, our programs could not be a success. Mahalo Nui Loa.
?xml:namespace>
Congratulations to the Access to Justice Hui and those who worked so long and hard on this endeavor!
